Frequently asked questions
What is Agile Octopus?
Agile Octopus is a smart-meter tariff from Octopus Energy where the electricity unit price changes every 30 minutes, following wholesale prices. Octopus says prices for the next 24 hours are published between 4pm and 8pm, usually nearer 4pm. It's capped at a maximum price, and can go below zero.
What is Octopus Tracker?
Octopus Tracker sets one electricity price per day (and one for gas) based on that day's wholesale cost, with a cap. You don't need to move your usage around – the price is the same all day.
When is the cheapest time to use electricity in the UK?
On Agile the cheapest half-hours are often overnight and sometimes around the middle of the day, but it changes daily with the wholesale market. Octopus says prices are usually highest between 4pm and 7pm. Use your region's page to see the exact cheapest 1–4 hour windows today. See also our guides section.
Why do prices sometimes go negative?
When there's more wind and solar power than the grid needs, wholesale prices can drop below zero. Agile passes this on, so customers are paid for each unit they use during those half-hours – a good time to charge an EV or home battery, or run the immersion heater.
Which region am I in?
Prices depend on your electricity distribution region (14 in Great Britain, letters A–P). Enter your postcode on the home page and we'll take you to the right one.
Do these prices include VAT and the standing charge?
Unit rates are shown as published by Octopus's public API in pence per kWh (the VAT-inclusive figure where given). The daily standing charge is separate and not included.
Are you Octopus Energy?
No. This is an independent site with no connection to Octopus Energy. We read Octopus's public price data and present it in an easy-to-use way. Always check your own app or bill for the rates that apply to you.
