Octopus Tracker explained

Independent site. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Octopus Energy Ltd. This guide is based on Octopus's own public documentation and the live data shown, which we link below. Tariff terms change, so always check Octopus's current terms for your own situation. This is general information, not financial or energy-switching advice.

Octopus Tracker gives you one electricity unit price per day, worked out from the wholesale market. You do not need to move your usage around within the day, because the price is the same from midnight to midnight. What changes is the price from one day to the next.

Where the daily price comes from

Octopus says Tracker prices follow an independently published wholesale market price. For electricity, that is the baseload average price from the N2EX GB Day-Ahead auction (Octopus's wording: the previous day's auction). Octopus feeds it into a formula that adds its other costs, such as network, environmental and social obligations, balancing and trading.

The formula is a multiplier on the wholesale price plus a fixed amount, and it is different for each region. Octopus publishes the formulas on its Tracker FAQs. For example, for London customers who joined or renewed on or after 1 April 2026, the electricity unit charge is (W × 1.30) + 9.717 pence per kWh, where W is the wholesale price in pence per kWh. Customers who joined earlier can be on older formulas, so check the FAQs for yours.

When is tomorrow's price published?

The cap, the term and leaving

  • Price cap: Octopus caps Tracker at 100p per kWh for electricity (30p per kWh for gas), including VAT. Octopus points out that is far above Ofgem's price cap, and says that if you cannot afford prices to go that high you may be better off on a protected tariff such as Flexible Octopus.
  • 12-month term: Octopus says Tracker is a 12-month fixed-term tariff. The formula and standing charge stay the same for the term; only the daily unit rate moves. Octopus reviews the formula and standing charge every three months, when the Ofgem price cap changes, and customers join or renew on the latest version.
  • Leaving: Octopus says there is no exit fee and you can leave at any time, but if you leave early you cannot rejoin Tracker for nine months.
  • Smart meter: Octopus requires a working smart meter to join. Unlike its other smart tariffs, Tracker can still be billed from meter readings if the meter stops reporting.
  • Seasons: Octopus says prices tend to be lower in warmer months and are likely to double in colder months.

Is Tracker the same as Agile?

No. Tracker has one price per day. Agile has 48 prices per day. Our guide to Agile vs Tracker compares them with today's real prices.
